5 Styles of Dresses to Wear to a Wedding This Summer

Summer wedding season is well underway, and even if you aren’t the belle of the ball (aka the bride), you still want to look like a radiant, well-dressed guest as you celebrate the romance of it all. The ceremony and reception will be a lot more fun if you’re not worried about what you’re wearing that day. There’s a ton of versatility in summer wedding clothes, so it’s perfectly acceptable to wear polished jumpsuits or carefully-chosen cute rompers, but, for this piece, let’s focus on the classic dress.

To make the day special, consider these five styles of wedding guest dresses that will leave you feeling beautiful, feminine, and ready to dance.

Maxi Dress

Summer just isn’t summer without a maxi dress. This floor-grazing goddess dress is so comfortable and wearable—for every body type. With the perfect maxi dress in your closet, you always have a go-to that you can easily dress up or down and wear to weddings, special nights out, and on casual weekends. Maxis are cut to flow loosely over the entire body and tend to be slightly more form-fitting on top. They never go out of style and come in every kind of fabric, color, and pattern imaginable. Maxis are a wardrobe essential and are perfect for attending a summer wedding.

Midi Dress

Maxis get a lot of attention, but what about its cousin the midi? A midi refers to any dress or skirt that falls between the calf and ankle. It is a great style of dress to wear to a wedding because it just looks classy. Midis also give you a chance to show off a great pair of strappy heels you’ve been dying to wear. You might consider picking up a chic clutch to polish your look even more.

Slip Dress

Just like it sounds, a slip dress resembles the silhouette of a slip. A more tailored slip dress might appear slightly more flattering than one that just hangs straight down. It’s perfectly fine to wear a slip dress to a wedding, just keep an eye out for variations and styles as some look better than others(and you certainly don’t want to wear white to a wedding that’s not your own). A slip dress is an excellent outfit to wear as a wedding guest or for a night out with the ladies. A little ruffle at the bottom and the neckline would look adorable.

Shift Dress

A simple shift dress is a short dress that hangs straight down from the shoulders with clean, simple lines. A classic shift dress is sleeveless, but some have off-the-shoulder or short-sleeve styles. With a shift dress, you don’t have to do anything fancy to it, just let the minimalism of it speak for itself. Not to be confused with a sheath dress, a shift dress is loose and comfy while a sheath dress is more form fitting to the curves of your body.

Wrap Dress

Wrap dresses are another style that is very flattering on different body types. They feature a tie waist, V-neckline, and an A-line skirt. Fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg created this classic in the ‘70s. Wrap dresses cinch perfectly at the slimmest part of your torso. A pretty floral wrap dress would make an excellent choice for a wedding this summer.

As long as you’re not wearing white, anything too revealing, sheer—or donning a tiara—you can probably get away with wearing just about anything if you dress it up a little. And yes, that includes cute rompers.
